Common iPhone sizes, dimensions and other stuff

I can’t count the amount of time I’ve gone fishing around for dimensions and stuff while I’ve been writing code.  Then usually, this distraction leads me to another distraction and before I know it, I’m playing Black Ops online.  This (lack of) productivity won’t stand, man!   So here for your convenience is a collection of measurements and stuff for the iPhone. I’ve included the high res versions of the measurements too (for the retina display on iPhone 4)

Screen dimensions / resolution

  • Screen layout width : 320 px
  • Screen layout height : 480 px
  • Screen resolution (iPhone 3GS and under) : 320 x 480 px
  • Screen resolution (iPhone 4) : 640 x 960 px

Screen elements

  • Status bar height : 20 px
  • Navigation bar height : 44 px
  • Tab bar height : 49 px

Element Images

  • Navigation bar image (Lo res) : 20 x 20 px or less (Hi res) : 40 x 40 px or less
  • Tab bar icon (Lo res) : 30 x 30 px or less (Hi res) : 60 x 60 px or less

Keyboard sizes

  • Keyboard height (portrait) : 216 px
  • Keyboard height (landscape) : 140 px

Application icon sizes

  • App store icon : 512 x 512 px
  • Launch image (Lo res) : 320 x 480 px (Hi res) : 640 x 960 px
  • Application icon (Lo res) : 57 x 57 px (Hi res) : 114 x 114 px
  • Spotlight icon (Lo res) : 29 x 29 px (Hi res) : 58 x 58 px

UI Control Sizes (defaults)

  • UIPickerView : 216 px high
  • UITextField : 31 px high
  • UISegmentedControl (plain) : 44 px high
  • UISegmentedControl (bar) : 30 px high
  • UISwitch : 94 x 27 px
  • UISlider : 23 px high
  • UIProgressView (default) : 9 px high
  • UIProgressView (bar) : 11 px high
  • UIActivityIndicatorView : 20 x 20 px
  • UIActivityIndicatorView (large) : 37 x 37 px
  • UIToolbar : 44 px high

Of course, you can read about the sizes here on the Apple website too. They also give some tips about how to keep your artwork looking good. I’ll add more measurements to this page as and when I need them.
